The Awakening of Mary will be on display for three days during The Spirit of Amsterdam. This beautiful light sculpture on the exterior (Spuistraat) of Dominicus Church brings Mary, both as mother and virgin, to life.
Ten contemporary women, ranging in age from 21 to 73 and from diverse ethnic backgrounds, embody this universal woman, full of purity, earthiness and inspiration.
In the work, the women are shown in their nakedness. Their heads are chastely covered with fragments and close-ups of their own skin, such as their wrists, fingers or necks. The garment, the skin, with which they engage in a dialogue with their surroundings, acts as a veil that makes them tangible and almost touchable.
