Dreaming of trees (also for kids)

StorytellingVisual ArtsWorkshops

What is our city without trees?

Step into the enchanting world of trees at the Nassau Church during The Spirit of Amsterdam. Trees are essential in a practical sense, but at least as much in a symbolic sense. In endless traditions, beliefs, myths and religions, the tree plays a key role. Almost everyone has a "favorite tree. Right?

The church will be transformed into a green oasis with small trees scattered throughout the space, which you can take away to nurture yourself. Discover the impressive disks of a 120-year-old sacred tree as artist Jos Bregman takes you through his story.

Throughout, there will be inspiring presentations on the importance of trees in the city and opportunities for greening. On Friday afternoon and Saturday morning you can make your own "dream purée" from the harvest of a tree, and embroider the poem "Under the Apple Tree" together. Musicians with woodwind provide a serene atmosphere in the tree church.

Children from various schools have been dreaming about trees and are contributing to this magical experience. Together we will decorate a tree on canvas and celebrate nature with an eye to the future.

Dreaming with Trees was inspired in part by: "Under the Apple Tree" by Rutger Kopland.

I came home, it was
about eight o'clock and rare
mild for the time of year,
the garden bench was ready
under the apple tree

I sat down and I sat
watching the neighbor
was still digging in his garden
night was coming from the earth
a bluer light hung
in the apple tree

then it slowly became too good
to be true, the things
of the day disappeared before the smell
of hay, there were again toys
in the grass and far away in the house
the children laughed in the bathtub
to where I sat, to
under the apple tree

and later I heard the wings
of geese in the sky
I heard how silent and empty
it was becoming

Luckily someone came and sat next to me
sat down, to be exact you
it was you who came and sat next to me
under the apple tree, rare
soft and close
for our age.
