What role can you play in this time of chaos and change? How do we break through the uproar in media and politics and find footing for a different narrative that we can start working on now, so that our lives and environment can be healthy, connected and just?
Merlijn Twaalfhoven is a composer and designed music projects in conflict areas, refugee camps and at the UN, in Israel and Palestine, in Cyprus and Syria. Here he discovered how much creative power there is in society and wrote the book "It's up to us, why we need the artist in us to save the world."
In a stimulating and musical evening with music by Jurriaan Berger and Loes Lune, improvisation and encounters, he brings an inspiring vista within reach by making ideals tangible and concrete. We will search for a heroic role for each of us. We sing, share and play, connecting ideals with the steps we can take now. So that we find footing in the chaos, and keep the courage to go on the road. Now is the moment; it's up to us.
You would think we would all disagree. If you follow the news and see what is going on on social media, it seems that the whole society is caught up in problems, tension and cultural differences. It is true. And at the same time, this picture is distorted.
We are willfully played off against each other. For media companies and certain politicians, unrest and conflict is a revenue model. Scandal, excitement and controversy generates attention, however short-lived. The riots in Amsterdam were an expression of great tension with a long run-up of provocation, propaganda and a torrent of violence. For the media and politics to throw oil on the fire in all sorts of ways here is not only reprehensible, but downright irresponsible.
We are hosting a gathering, a crisis council for all who believe there is a very different reality. On Friday evening, Nov. 22, we will make space for relaxation, healing and connection by experiencing how to find common ground and connection - not only within one's own circle, but right through usual divisions and toxic incitement.
Can we see each other? What does it take to not only hear each other scream, but understand each other? What could we agree on?
We will look for practical and tangible ways to break through the division and chaos that prevail and claim more space for imagination, play and beauty. We will discover how to stand firm in a stormy time, how to connect between groups, and how a story can resonate that gives us footing as Amsterdammers and fellow human beings.
