This evening, several queer Muslim filmmakers share the stage to curate a special evening revolving around the queer Muslim experience, based on the short film Taboo Tabee. Muslims from the LGBTQ+ community often face discrimination because of their ethnicity, faith and sexual orientation or gender identity. Their struggle goes much deeper than just internal dialogue.
They are left with questions about how they blend into their environment. And what do you do when you're also struggling with your gender identity? Many people think in binary terms: you are either queer or Muslim. But what if you are both? People who are both queer and Muslim bring unique stories that give us a better understanding of their culture, beliefs and sexual orientation or gender identity. Their experiences are valuable and offer us important lessons about identity.
