The Nieuwe Kerk is a church building in Amsterdam. The church is located on Dam Square, at number 12, next to the Palace on Dam Square. Moses and Aaron Street runs between the church and the Palace.
The Sint-Nicolaaskerk (Old Church), Amsterdam's first parish church, was found to be too small due to the enormous growth of the city in the second half of the 14th century. On November 15, 1408, Bishop Frederick of Blankenheim of Utrecht gave permission for a second parish church. The church was dedicated to Our Lady, and later to St. Catherine. By then, however, construction was well advanced.
