Protestant Diaconate

The Diaconate has played an important role in Amsterdam since 1578. It originated from the Reformed Church of Amsterdam (now the Protestant Church) and was responsible for "social work" in the city. For example, the Diaconie arranged care for the poor, orphans, the elderly and widows. Today, the Diaconate consists of a wide network of diaconal properties, courtyards and community centers - but its presence in the city is most evident in the work of people set up in many different Diaconal projects. The Diaconate is also the home of The Spirit of Amsterdam.
